When listening to music or videos on the onboard speakers the sound will randomly and inexplicably fade to inaudible levels over the span of a few seconds, even at full volume. The volume returns to normal after pausing or muting the audio for a few seconds and then restarting it but then fades right back down to nearly nothing. I have gone through the automated HP Support Assistant troubleshooter as well as the built-in Windows 10 audio troubleshooter.
Neither restarting the computer, reinstalling the Realtek Audio driver, nor a hard reset has resolved the issue. Thanks for joining the HP Support Forums community! Most of what I would have asked you to do for troubleshooting you said that you have already performed. Right click the Speaker icon in the bottom right corner by your time. Click Playback Devices. Click Speakers. Click properties. Click the advanced tab on the Properties window. Change the Default Format drop-down to the highest quality.
Apply the properties. Click OK to close the properties window. Restart the Notebook and test the sound. Let me know the results of the troubleshooting. If you need more assistance, I would be more than happy to continue to help! I only bought the computer a couple of weeks ago so the problem basically came with it. There was never any older driver on the system that was free of the problem so I have not tried any older drivers, only the two most recent ones.
Updating to the new driver appeared to work for a few days but unfortunately the problem resurfaced again this afternoon. The speakers were set to the highest quality format by default, so there was nothing to change there. Unfortunately, this did not resolve the problem either, even though I was very excited that I may have found it there.
As far as your last suggestion, I have no Enhancements tab. Would it be in another place? Or is there a chance that it would not come with the software for my system? Thank you very much for your suggestion. This sounds like exactly the problem I was experiencing.
Unfortunately, after installing the update the sound faded once again, so it doesn't seem like it was able to resolve this issue. That said, I installed the latest audio driver through HP Support Assistant and the sound has not faded since I did that several days ago. If I pause the media and then hit "play", the sound will again play fine before fading out. The exact length of time before fadeout varies -- it can last as long as 20 seconds, or start fading immediately.
It only does this if I'm using my device speakers, which is why it took me so long to realize it was doing it -- I usually use headphones. I've tried updating my speaker's drivers. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers. I ran troubleshooting and it brought back a clean bill of health. I changed the default format from 24 bit to 16 bit, and that seemed to help a little the sound didn't fade as fast, and it stopped making this "crinkling" noise whenever something was playedthen tried searching for new drivers still saying I have the latest drivers installed and troubleshooting.
This time, the troubleshooting brought up the fact that I might want to turn off sound effects and audio enchancements; when I went to try, there was no "Enhancements" tab. I've been working on this problem off and on for months -- again, I usualy use headphones so it's not usually a problem, but when I need my speakers I need my speakers.

Home theater system speakers sound fading in and out?
However, I started noticing it more as I watched something else later that day, on files that usually play sound and video perfectly. I still thought it was VLC player though, so I restored all the default preferences, which didn't work, and I reinstalled and fully updated it but that didn't make a difference either.
Today though, I realised the problem isn't VLC player because I noticed it while playing back a video on YouTube, and now I can hear it just playing audio through Foobar, which I couldn't before. I've tested playing the audio through my headphones and there is no fading in and out or jumps up in volume but there is when I play through the speakers, which makes me think it's down to the speakers.
I also checked all the connections, cleaned and rewired them back up. Still, no difference. I checked whether I had any stupid audio effects on that might mess things up too, but I don't, so that can be ruled out too.
Anybody have a differential diagnosis? I accidentally had the speakers so loud the output audio distorted today too, which could have made it worse and led to it becoming more noticeable. The sound doesn't distort when it happens though, just turns itself down and up at seemingly random intervals, so I don't think I blew a speaker.
Could it be a faulty connection in the hard-wires of the speaker setup?
I will say that replacing the speakers would be the next thing to do. Yeah, that's what I was thinking too, but could it be anything else do you think? And I am using a 25' cable. Maybe 4 times since I bought them last Fall. I imagine since you weren't too sure what "peaking" meant, maybe your tweeters are screaming for help and they're resetting themselves. I believe MIC button isn't pushed down. Make sure the speaker isn't peaking. Make sure it is set to line and not mic - but it seems from the picture you're alright.

All the way to the left is db. Maybe is sending out a funky signal. You know how many times something is going funky and you tear apart your whole system only to realize it was a bad wire. I purchased a Dell Inspiron at the end of the summer that had Windows 8. I did the upgrade, everything's been fine knock on wood except for the audio. Music and videos will start out playing at one volume, drop, go back up, drop, go back up, etc. It does it when I'm playing speakers or headphones, definitely more noticeable with headphones. I've done everything I can think of, including streaming the music through my library on Amazon, messing with the device settings I'm out of ideas and getting very, very frustrated.
